24” x24” plus frame

Part of my "Woven" series exploring heritage, comfort and family, "Hello" emerged amid the isolating pandemic. After months of quarantine, this piece marked my first time working with a model - an eerie yet intimate reunion in the misty strangeness of that moment.

The model's face is shrouded by a hand-knitted afghan from my grandmother, its fabric forming a sheltering cocoon. Wispy tendrils of hair dissolve into the cozy, protective blanket. In an uncertain world, all we could rely on was the safety of our homes and loved ones.

Amidst this piece's subdued palette, her emerging face represents catharsis from that time when security and family were paramount. We collectively cocooned inward, finding refuge in our heritage's woven warmth, before reemerging into the world's light.

"Hello" captures the strange vulnerability of severed connections reinstating—a sheltered figure tentatively peeking out, yearning to reconnect yet still enveloped in the comforting roots of her familial tapestry. It is an embodiment of the hope that though we momentarily withdraw, the threads tying us to each other can never fully unravel.
