Fall Away
Oil on Aluminum Artist Panel
24” x 24”
Throughout “Woven,” I've incorporated hand-knitted afghans crafted by my grandmother, transforming these family heirlooms into powerful symbols of protection and heritage.
As the pandemic unfolded, these afghans became more than textiles; they were shields against an uncertain world. Each piece in the series initially reflected our instinct to withdraw, to cocoon ourselves in the comfort of our histories and homes.
But as time passed, a shift occurred. A tentative hope began to stir, whispering of renewal and connection. "Fall Away" captures this crucial moment. The afghan slipping from the shoulders represents not a movement away from the past, but a recognition that growth often requires stepping beyond our comfort zones.
This piece embodies my own journey of re-emergence and the courage needed to shed protective layers. It's an invitation to reflect on our collective experience of isolation and the subsequent embracing of new freedom and joy.
